Wedding Cake Tips
Wedding cakes range in price anywhere from about $1.50 to $20.00 per slice, depending on the type of decorations and filling ingredients you choose. If you have a large number of guests, then a few budget friendly tips can easily save you hundreds of dollars on the overall cost of your wedding cake.
Ask your baker to prepare cheaper sheet cakes along with one intricate but smaller cake just for the photos, or a styrofoam display cake with real frosting and a small section of real cake for the bride and groom to cut.
The sheet cakes can be sliced up in the kitchen and served to most of the guests. Your guests won't know the difference, especially if the display cake is wheeled out to the kitchen before dessert is served.
You can also save money by leaving out expensive ingredients, such as liqueurs. Opt for seasonal flower and fruit garnishes and avoid handmade sugar paste flowers, complex cake shapes, or time consuming frosting techniques. (Article continued below)

Wedding Cake Tips (cont'd)
Depending on the time of year of your wedding, consult with your baker about icing options. For example, outdoor weddings in a hot climate can lead to buttercream, meringue, or whipped cream meltdown, whereas fondant doesn't need to be refridgerated.
Select a cake table that also works with the shape of your cake. Display a round cake on a round table and choose a square or rectangle shaped table for a square or rectangle shaped cake.
If you have your heart set on having a tiered wedding cake, the rule of thumb is that three tiers serve 50 to 100 guests, four tiers serve 100 to 200 guests and five or more tiers will serve over 200 guests.
