Guide to Choosing a Wedding Veil

Wedding veils add a magical touch to your bridal outfit. When choosing a veil, it's important to consider the design and styling of your wedding gown. The goal is to achieve a balanced look overall. Brides can choose from long and romantic veils in simple to intricate styles, or shorter veils, in any variety of colors ranging from traditional ivory or white, to modern shades of diamond white, gold, champagne, mocha, and pastels. Veils can be plain or detailed with rhinestones, pearls, beading, sequins, metallic threads, embroidery, colored ribbon, or lace.

Wedding Veil Fabrics

Soft bridal tulle is most commonly used for wedding veils. Bridal illusion, a softer tulle, is also popular for veils, and the fabric of a shimmer veil creates a soft glow around the bride's head, making it a great choice for sunny outdoor wedding locations and pictures. Most wedding veils are designed to be detachable, and come with a metal or plastic comb, which makes it to wear for a formal wedding and remove for a reception.

The Most Popular Veil Lengths

The most commonly worn veil styles are shoulder, elbow, fingertip, chapel, or cathedral lengths. Shoulder length wedding veils are a great choice for either a formal or informal wedding. Elbow length wedding veils are commonly used with gowns that do not have a train. Fingertip and chapel length veils are an elegant choice to complement a wedding gown which has a train. Both elbow and fingertip veils are typically used for formal weddings. A chapel length veil looks best when worn with a gown which has a chapel length train. The cathedral length veil works perfectly with a gown which has a cathedral length train.

Choosing a Veil for Your Height

Other things to consider when choosing a veil, are your height and where the focal points are located on your wedding dress. If you are petite, you should select an elbow length veil. If you are taller than 5 feet 8 inches, you should select a fingertip veil. If you in between these heights, you can choose either style of veil. Also, keep in mind that depending on where you will be wearing your veil on your head, it may be longer or shorter in length. The overall detailing of your dress, including the back, should be considered when choosing the perfect veil. If the focal point of your gown is at your waist area, then choose a veil which does not end exactly at your waist. Ideally, the veil should end just above or just below any focal point on your dress, whether the focal point is at your neckline, waist, or elsewhere on the dress.

What is a Blusher Bridal Veil?

A blusher bridal veil is most commonly worn in a traditional ceremony by first time brides. It is a short, single veil that is worn over the bride's face before the ceremony. During the wedding ceremony it is lifted over her head. The top layer of a 2 or 3 layer bridal veil can be used as the blusher.

How to Match Your Veil to Your Dress Color

Here are a few tips for choosing a veil to match with your wedding dress.

White Dress: A white satin wedding dress works perfectly with a white tulle or bridal illusion veil.

White Silk Dress: A white silk wedding dress works well with a diamond white veil. Diamond white was actually designed for white silk gowns because silk is a natural fiber and does not look stark white. Diamond white will look white against a light ivory gown.

Ivory Dress: If your gown is a light ivory color, an ivory veil will work best with it. If your gown is a darker ivory tone, then you should consider a dark ivory veil.

Champagne Dress: This popular wedding dress color works well with a light ivory color veil.

How to Create A Balanced Look Overall with Your Wedding Dress

It's all in the details when selecting a veil or headpiece to match with your gown. Wedding veils can be detailed with either a plain cut edge, embroidered edge, satin cord or ribbon edge, beaded with pearls or rhinestones, or detailed with metallic thread. The choices seem endless when it comes to modern bridal veil designs.

The satin cord edge is round, and sewn to the edge of the veil, giving it a slight curve and more body, while a satin ribbon edge is flat, and makes the veil hang more flat and straight.

Check the beading and details on your wedding dress. Choose a veil which has the same detail elements as your dress, such as pearls, rhinestones, beads, a floral design, etc. If you prefer a plain veil, you can select a tiara (also called a headpiece) which has the same detail elements as your dress.

The most important thing to remember when choosing your veil or tiara is to achieve a balanced look with your wedding dress. The sparkle in a veil or tiara and the contrasting color between your veil and hair will raise the focal point from your dress to your face. To achieve this, your veil or tiara should contain the same detail elements as your dress. For example, the satin ribbon edging on a veil, without other beading, will accent the fabric of your dress, and pearl beading on your veil or tiara will bring out the pearl beading on your wedding dress to complete your bridal outfit.
