Perfect Prom Hair Guide

Choosing your dress, shoes, and accessories are the first steps in putting together your perfect Prom look. Picking the right hairstyle will also have a big impact on your overall outfit. The perfect hairdo should create a balanced look with your dress.

Four popular hairstyles for Prom are the updo, hair down - either straight or curled, the ponytail, and the half-up hairdo.

Our easy tips will help you create the perfect hairstyle to complete your Prom outfit.

When choosing your Prom hairstyle, the length and texture of your hair will help you determine the best way to wear your hair. Another consideration for choosing your hairdo, is what works with the design of your dress. For example, if the neckline is low cut, strapless, or off the shoulder, you can wear a style that lets your tresses hang down around your shoulders to cover a large area of bare skin.

For a straight or curled hair down look, begin by washing and blowdrying your hair. Use a small amount of mousse at the roots to add some volume to your tresses.

The next step for curly or wavy hair, is to set it either with hot rollers or a curling iron. The hottest Prom hair look right now is to have your hair smooth on top with curl below the ear level, to the ends.

Style your hair with your fingers not a hairbrush, then finish with a spritz of firm hold hairspray. If you’re using a straightening iron to create a straight hair look, work in sections and straighten each section of hair from root to the ends. Avoid stopping in one place as you work, so that you don’t burn your hair.

Wearing your hair half up leaves most of the hair to hang down while bringing focus to your face. It also lets you show off a fabulous pair of dangling earrings!

To create this look, wash and blowdry your hair first. Next, separate and tease a section of your hair at your forehead or crown. To tease hair, use a fine tooth comb and work from the end to the tip of the section. Spritz the roots of the section with a small amount hairspray after you’ve teased in the amount of volume that you want. Let the hairspray dry, then smooth over the top layer of the teased section. Create a small French twist in the back of your head and secure it with a pretty barette or sparkling hairclip.

Try a ponytail for a modern version of a glam updo. To create a special occasion worthy ponytail, begin by styling your hair as you would for either of the down hairstyles above. You can add some curl to the ends of your hair and even tease volume into a section of hair at the crown before gathering it back into a low, high, or sideswept ponytail. Secure the hair with a covered elastic band, then add a jewelled hair clip or colorful hairwrap to your ponytail. Keep the sides of your hair in place by spritzing with hairspray.

Stylish updos are created from hair that isn’t freshly washed. It’s best to wash your hair a day or two beforehand, otherwise your hair will slip and slide too much when you work with it.

You can create an easy and elegant updo in one of three ways. The first is by curling your hair in sections and pinning each section up. The second method is to pull your hair into a low ponytail and then twist the hair around itself and pin it into place in a low chignon. The third option is to pull your hair back to the base of your neck as if you were creating a low ponytail, then twist the hair upwards and pin it in place at the back of your head. You can decorate your updo by adding sparkling hair jewels, a colorful flower hairclip, or even an elegant crystal headband.

HEALTHY HAIR TIPS: If your hairstyle needs a lot of hairspray for teasing or curling, don't forget to load your hair with a good detangling conditioner before shampooing after your event, or you will have lots of breakage.

Want to have super-shiny, healthy looking tresses for Prom? Start a hair care routine as early as possible. Use an intense reconstructing salon treatment once or twice weekly to keep your hair in top condition. This type of treatment will also make your hair strands easier to manage, with less breakage and it gives your hair a great natural looking shine.

Use a leave-in moisturizer after each shampooing to make your hair stronger and protect itr from the drying and damaging effects of the sun, salt, or chlorine water.
